Slime Mold, Mazes, Traffic, and How to Get from Here to There

I only have 15 minutes:

Lately I've been learning from science news articles that slime mold has amazing skills in the area of finding the shortest route among several destinations, something I'm told is difficult even for computers.

Anyway, this article is one of a couple I've seen lately where we're using slime mold to check on our road and railways.

Apparently, you can make a maze, put slime mold food—how disgusting must that be?—at the end of the maze, and the slime mold is very good, not only at finding the food, but at finding it with the shortest route.

Stunning.

I'm sure that has something to do with evolution, but I don't have time to think it through.

Wow, only about 3 minutes. Y'all have a great day!
