Transgenic Organisms

I have to share this Discovery article about transgenic animals with you.

Transgenics is the science of taking a gene from one organism and putting it in another. Because DNA is common to all living cells--perhaps the most amazing proof of evolution that there is--all cells can read the genes of other cells, no matter how different the organism.

In this way we use the human insulin gene to get yeast and bacteria to produce insulin for diabetics. Yes, that's really the way insulin is produced.

The discovery article has the top 10 transgenic animals, including goats that are being used to produce spider silk, which is stronger than steel!
